It’s pretty frightening really, seeing those numbers roll over when you pump gas into your car.

Here are a few suggestions: |
 |
1. Ensure that your vehicles are properly maintained. Under-inflated tyres, dirty oil, clogged air filters and poorly tuned engines all increase your fuel costs.
2. Consolidate your trips and car pool. Do all your chores in the one trip. If you have children see if there are other parents you can car-pool with.
3. Walk, cycle or public transport. About two-thirds of all car journeys are less than 2km. Public transport, where available, can save a lot of money, especially if you have to pay for parking. In the same way, many schools have walking buses for children now – they are safe and the kids love walking with their friends.
4. Drive smoothly. The Automobile Association says that accelerating and driving at a moderate and steady speed can save up to 4 per cent in petrol. I heard one person explain it by saying, “Drive as if there is an egg between your foot and the accelerator.
5. Remove accessories and reduce drag. Remove your roof rack and anything else that can create drag. Empty your boot and backseats of anything that you don’t need to carry around.
6. Turn off the air-conditioning. Open your windows instead of using air conditioning all the time. Use window shades and park in the shade to keep your car cool. I read it is more economical to drive with a window down than to use your air conditioning up to the speed of 80 km/hr. After that it is more economical to use the air conditioner.
7. Don’t sit with your engine idling. Contrary to popular belief, ten seconds of idling can use more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it.
8. Shop on-line. You can save time and petrol by grocery shopping on-line. Shop also for books, Cd's and just about anything else, all from reputable companies who will mail/courier/deliver your items. If you have to visit the shops, go locally.
9. Trade in your vehicle(s) for vehicles with better fuel economy. Cars have better fuel mileage than trucks/vans/SUVs and smaller cars have even better fuel mileage.
10. Get vehicles that don’t run on petrol. Buy vehicles that run on other fuels or types of energy. One solution is a hybrid car, a vehicle that combines a fuel-efficient petrol engine with an electric motor.
