Could you do Better with your Power Bill?

power_bill.jpgWe’re at the time of the year when receiving the monthly power bill can be something of a shock! Have you ever thought there may be a cheaper power source or a better way of paying for your power?

We’ve mentioned in previous newsletters Consumer magazine’s Powerswitch power calculator. Go to www.consumer.org.nz/powerswitch and you will find a calculator that enables you to compare power companies and discover if there are savings to be made by going to a different supplier. For some people savings will be minimal and will mean switching companies is not worth the hassle. For others, however, there may be big savings to be made. One testimony on the site claims he was able to save $83 per month!

Once you have found your cheapest supplier it is worth going to their website and finding out what payment options they may have that would help your finances.
For instance:

Mercury Energy – have multiple means of paying your power and many of them are rewarded with 10% discounts. They also have a pay-as-you-go scheme that is great for people who sometimes struggle to pay their accounts.
Energy Online – is a new company who offers up to 20% discount for prompt payment.
Genesis Energy – have a scheme called EvenPay Direct. If you go on EvenPay Direct, they will assess your power usage based on previous bills. They will then arrange for you to be direct debited an amount that is the same each week or month (whichever you choose). This way your payments are evened out over the year making it easier to budget for your electricity. And, they pay any bank set-up fees. And, if you overpay, they credit your account.
Contact Energy – have a similar scheme to Genesis’ EvenPay, it’s called SmoothPay.
empower – like most electricity suppliers, will negotiate with their customers in the event that they are struggling to pay their bills. If you find making your power payments difficult, contact your supplier and talk about what might be able to be done to help you keep your power going.

What this shows is the need to be proactive about managing your finances. Where electricity is concerned, at least do these two things; First contact a few other companies or the Powerswitch website to see if you can pay less for your power. Then check out your supplier’s website to see if they have a plan or scheme that can save you even more money.
