How to Save Money When You Travel.
Saving on accommodation:
There are a few sites on the internet now that enable you to source the best deals for accommodation. For New Zealand hotels, check out; www.lastminute.co.nz and for overseas, see www.wotif.com. If a bach is more your style go to www.bookabach.co.nz, where around 2,500 bach owners have listed their baches for rent. If you are not particular about where exactly you go, you can book at the last minute and get large discounts. Saving on airfares: The Air New Zealand site; www.grabaseat.co.nz has fantastic deals. If you are looking to go on holiday but don’t have definite times planned, then check it out. You can get daily updates by email. For overseas flights there are sites that will compare individual airlines for you. e.g. www.webjet.co.nz. Be careful, however. Having got information about a flight, go to the airline website direct and see if it is cheaper there. Also, when comparing prices, make sure you are aware of the currency you are dealing in and whether your price includes all taxes etc. Crossing the strait: Crossing Cook Strait can be expensive. The interisland ferry offers a service called, cruisey pay. With cruisey pay you are able to pay off your fare in advance by making a small payment each month. Don’t forget the Information Centres: Most cities and towns around the world have Information Centres - places you can go and get information about touristy things to do in that place. The staff are well trained and understand that many travellers want to do things cheap. Check with them about what the best things to do in their town are. Some of the best things are free: I think we can all identify with this. Sometimes the best things we do are the things that cost the least, or even nothing! Don’t feel like you need to spend a lot of money to have a great time. Our best holidays as a family have been camping at the beach, cooking on a BBQ, and playing board games by gaslight in the evenings. Think about when you travel: There is money to be saved if you book early. Check out those cheap fare sites and you may be surprised. In the same way, money can be saved by booking late, but you cannot guarantee flights or accommodation. Shop around: As with everything it pays to shop around. Especially if you are going on a holiday where you are going to be flying, staying in a hotel and getting a rental car. Shop around because the reality is, sometimes it is cheaper to buy these things separately, and other times it is cheaper to get a package deal and pay for them all at once. Food: It’s great to eat out when you travel - it is also a great way to spend a lot of money quickly. Stay in a place with some kitchen facilities and you have the opportunity to save quite a bit of money. And about that cell phone! Many people return from holiday to be shocked at the size of their mobile phone bill. Roaming charges on a cell-phone can be astronomical! Save by purchasing a cheap phone before you go, and get a SIM card when you get to your destination. Then just top up on pre-pay as you go. (Just make sure the phone will work wherever you are going!).
