As always, doing only one of these won't make a huge difference to your budget but, do them all and there should be a noticeable saving.

1] Turn your hot water cylinder down. A hot shower is great in winter but in summer it can be downright uncomfortable - and expensive too. Turn the thermostat of your hot water cylinder down a few degrees and you should notice a marked saving on your power bill.

2] Cook outside. By using a gas BBQ you can save on a couple of counts. Firstly, it will usually be cheaper than using your stove. Secondly, you don't have the stove heating up your home causing discomfort and needing cooling.

3] Plant a garden. Yes, I know, there is nothing worse than gardening if you don't like it - but your vegetable patch doesn't have to be big. Mine is about four metres by two metres and I am able to grow many of the vege's we eat by spending just 15 minutes or so a week pulling out the odd weed and planting new plants. And there is no doubt, it feels great eating vegetables you grew yourself.

4] Don't use air-conditioning. Sure, sometimes we need to turn it on, but often air conditioners are run to create an inside temperature that is equivalent to the outside temperature. Open windows instead and get a breeze blowing through your home. Remember, despite what the ad's say, air conditioners use a lot of power!
And about the car air-con; it is far easier on the petrol bill just to wind down the window; unless you are travelling over 80km/hr in which case, because of drag on the car caused by airflow, it is more economical to wind up the windows and use the air conditioning.

5] Dry your laundry outside. Clothes driers use a lot of power. If you have the space to do it, let the sun and the breeze dry your washing for you - it's free!

6] Plan ahead for projects around your home and garden. We all do it, we wake up, see that it is going to be a fine weekend and so rush out to the plant shop or the local hardware to buy whatever we need for a project we've been meaning to do for sometime. The money-saving thing to do is to wander around your property ahead of time and make a note of all the things that need doing. Then buy the materials when they are on special so that they are there on that fine Saturday morning. Just make sure you are actually going to complete the project though, because otherwise you may purchase products you never use.
